Scroll of the Echo
A logarithm is an echo of a power. log₂(32) asks: how many times must I multiply 2 to reach 32?
Count the Steps
Multiply the base again and again and count the steps until you hit the number.
log₂(32)
- → 2 → 4 → 8 → 16 → 32
- → Five steps
Answer: 5
log of the base itself is always 1, and log of 1 is always 0.
Practice: Try log₃(81) and log₁₀(1000).
Merge the Echoes
Subtracting logs with the same base means dividing inside. Adding means multiplying inside.
log₁₀(500) − log₁₀(5)
- → 500 ÷ 5 = 100
- → log₁₀(100) = 2
Answer: 2
Practice: Try log₂(4) + log₂(8) = log₂(32).
