型 · Order of operations
Scroll of the Kata
A kata is a fixed form where many moves flow together. In maths, the form is the order of operations.
The Form
Brackets first, then powers, then × and ÷, then + and −. Strongest moves first.
84 ÷ 12 + 14 × 3
- → 84 ÷ 12 = 7
- → 14 × 3 = 42
- → 7 + 42 = 49
Answer: 49
Practice: Try 7 × 8 + 36 ÷ 4.
Substitute and Strike
When one value is given, put it in first, then solve what remains.
y = 3, 2y + 2x = 12
- → 2·3 + 2x = 12
- → 2x = 6
- → x = 3
Answer: x = 3
Practice: Try y = 7, 3y + 3x = 32 (answer 11/3).
