Scroll of Flow
A fraction is a number of equal pieces. The bottom says how big each piece is, the top says how many you have.
Same Size Pieces
With the same denominator, only the tops change. The piece size stays the same.
3/8 + 2/8
- → Pieces are eighths
- → 3 + 2 = 5 eighths
Answer: 5/8
Practice: Try 5/6 − 4/6 and 2/9 + 5/9.
Common Ground
Different denominators? Cut both into the same size pieces first. Multiply the denominators if you see no smaller match.
2/3 − 1/4
- → Twelfths fit both
- → 2/3 = 8/12, 1/4 = 3/12
- → 8/12 − 3/12 = 5/12
Answer: 5/12
Practice: Try 1/2 + 1/3 and 3/4 − 1/6.
Straight Strike
Multiplying fractions is the easy one: top times top, bottom times bottom. Then simplify.
4/5 × 2/4
- → 4 × 2 = 8, 5 × 4 = 20
- → 8/20 — divide both by 4
Answer: 2/5
Dividing? Flip the second fraction and multiply: 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 2.
Practice: Try 2/3 × 3/4 and 3/5 ÷ 3/10.
